Growing lemongrass

Lemongrass is a tropical plant that can be grown in warm, humid climates. It can be grown in the ground or in containers. It can be grown from seed or from separating the rhizomes.

Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Lemongrass prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial shade.

The soil should be rich and loamy.

Amend the soil with compost or manure before planting. This will help to improve drainage and fertility.

Plant the lemongrass rhizomes 6 inches deep and 12 inches apart. The rhizomes are the underground stems of the plant.

Water the lemongrass regularly, especially during the first few weeks after planting.

Fertilize the lemongrass every few months with a balanced fertilizer.

Harvest the lemongrass when the stalks are about 12 inches tall. You can harvest the leaves or the entire stalk.

Protect the lemongrass from frost in cold climates. You can do this by covering the plant with a burlap sack or moving it to a greenhouse or conservatory.

Not sure where the best spot is to put your lemongrass? Put it in a pot that will allow you to move it around your yard until you find its happy spot.

Enjoy!
