My Love of Gardening

I love to GARDEN!!! Everyday I grab a cup of coffee and head outside to the porch. I sit there sipping my coffee and enjoying our beautiful garden. There is a peace and joy that surrounds my entire being as I sit there taking it all in. Many years ago all there was, was a big yard of grass. Little by little, I started adding a plant here and then a plant there. The more I did it, the more I loved it. There is always something to do in the garden. Always something to create, something to see, something to enjoy. I hope that as we share our garden and plants with you that they bring you as much joy as they bring us. Happy Gardening!

Indoor Summer Garden - Lettuce in a Cup

It is time to bring the garden inside!!!

Summer is here and we all feel it including the plants..

Unfortunately it becomes pretty much impossible to grow our greens outside.   Temps are in the 90's and the humidity is climbing.

How do we bring the plants inside and grow them?

I think there are many different ways you could do this and just like gardening outdoors, try your ideas until you find what works for you.

What is working for us?

I call this "Lettuce in a Cup"

This is working out great! Its growing well, it stays in the cup and we cut it as we need it.  We can add a little to our tacos or maybe a few leaves to add to a burger or make a salad.   You can use it however you see fit.

Its requirements are:

* Water. I use a hydroponics water nutrient. I keep the cups in a shoe bucket.  The bucket will hold 6 cups.  I keep a small amount of water in the shoe bucket.   I have holes drilled in the bottom of the cup to absorb the water.

*Bright Light. I am using a nice bright led light.  If you get enough light from a window I would assume that would work.

*Air flow. Ours is next to a ceiling fan so it is getting a breeze.

*Temperature - we are currently having some ac issues and redoing the ac so its pretty warm in the house.   Upper 80's but so far our "Lettuce in a Cup"   seems to be doing fine in these conditions.

Happy Indoor Gardening!!!

Growing Rosemary

Rosemary is a hardy herb that is relatively easy to grow. It can be grown in the ground or in containers. Here are some tips on how to grow rosemary:

Choose a planting site with full sun and well-drained soil. Rosemary does not like wet roots, so avoid planting it in heavy clay soil.

If you are planting in the ground, amend the soil with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.

Space plants 2-3 feet apart.

Water rosemary regularly, especially during the first few weeks after planting. Once the plant is established, water it deeply once a week, or more often if the weather is hot and dry.

Fertilize rosemary once a month with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

Prune rosemary regularly to encourage new growth. You can also harvest leaves throughout the growing season.

To grow rosemary from cuttings, follow these steps:

Take a 4-6 inch cutting from a healthy plant.

Remove the lower leaves from the cutting.

Dip the cutting in rooting hormone.

Plant the cutting in a pot filled with well-draining potting mix.

Water the cutting well and place it in a warm, sunny location.

The cutting should root in about 4-6 weeks.

Once the cutting has rooted, you can transplant it to the ground or to a larger pot.

Protect rosemary from frost in cold winter climates. You can do this by covering the plant with a burlap sack or by bringing it indoors.

Watch out for pests and diseases. Rosemary is susceptible to spider mites, aphids, and powdery mildew. If you see any pests or diseases, treat them immediately.

Harvest rosemary leaves when they are young and fresh. The leaves can be used fresh or dried.

Chaya/ Tree Spinach

Chaya, also known as tree spinach, is a tropical plant that is native to Mexico and Central America. It is a fast-growing plant that can reach heights of up to 20 feet. The leaves of the chaya plant are edible and are a good source of vitamins A, C, and K.

Chaya can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. The soil should be well-drained and rich in organic matter. Chaya plants are drought-tolerant but will benefit from regular watering.

To grow chaya from seed, sow the seeds in a well-drained potting mix. The seeds should be planted about 1/2 inch deep and kept moist. The seedlings will emerge in about 2-3 weeks.

Chaya can also be propagated from cuttings. To take a cutting, cut a 6-inch piece of stem from a healthy plant. Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting and plant it in a well-drained potting mix. The cutting should root in about 2-3 weeks.

Once the chaya plant is established, it can be grown in the ground or in a large pot. The plant should be watered regularly, especially during hot weather. Chaya plants should be fertilized every 2-3 months with a balanced fertilizer.

The leaves of the chaya plant can be harvested throughout the year. To harvest the leaves, cut them off the stem with a sharp knife. The leaves can be eaten when cooked.

Here are some tips for growing chaya:

Choose a location that receives full sun or partial shade.

The soil should be well-drained and rich in organic matter.

Water the plant regularly, especially during hot weather.

Fertilize the plant every 2-3 months with a balanced fertilizer.

Harvest the leaves throughout the year.

Chaya plants are susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects. These pests can be controlled with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Chaya plants can also be affected by powdery mildew. This fungal disease can be prevented by watering the plant regularly and avoiding overhead watering.

If you live in an area with cold winters, chaya plants can be grown in a container and brought indoors during the winter.

Chaya is a nutrient-dense plant that is a vegetable. It has been used for centuries for its medicinal and culinary properties. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, iron, and protein.

Here are some of the potential health benefits of chaya:

Harvesting Elderberry

Harvesting some elderberries from the elderberry tree today.

You can easily grow elderberry from seeds or cuttings.

Elderberries are a hardy and versatile plant that can be grown in a variety of climates. They are native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and can be found growing wild in many areas.

Here are some tips on how to grow elderberries:

Choose a planting site that gets full sun for at least 6 hours per day. Elderberries can tolerate partial shade, but they will produce more berries if they get full sun.

The soil should be well-drained and slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5). If your soil is alkaline, you can amend it with peat moss or sulfur.

Plant elderberries in the spring or fall. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball of the plant. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil, tamping down gently. Water the plant well.

Elderberries are not heavy feeders, but they will benefit from an annual application of compost or manure.

Water the plants regularly, especially during the first year after planting. Elderberries need about 1 inch of water per week.

Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Prune the plants in the late winter or early spring. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.

Elderberries can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or layering. Seed propagation is the most difficult method, but it can be successful if the seeds are fresh. Cuttings and layering are more reliable methods.

Elderberries are a relatively pest- and disease-free plant. However, they can be susceptible to aphids, scale insects, and powdery mildew. If you notice any pests or diseases, treat them promptly with an appropriate pesticide or fungicide.

With proper care, elderberries can be a beautiful and productive addition to your garden. They can be harvested in the fall and used to make jams, jellies, pies, syrups, and other delicious treats. The berries can also be used to make medicinal remedies.

Plant two or more plants for cross-pollination. This will help to ensure a good crop of berries.

Harvest the berries when they are fully ripe. They will be black or dark purple.

Do not eat the leaves, stems, or roots of the elderberry plant. These parts of the plant can be poisonous.

Elderberries do send out runners so you will need to dig them up to maintain.
